The town was a major battlefield during the War of 1812 when Canada was invaded by the United States.  The town was shelled, attacked, captured, occupied and later put to the torch by the American army as it retreated from a combined British, Canadian and Native force.  Rising from the ashes at the end of the war, the town was rebuilt and has been preserved in its 19th century splendour.
