Niagara-on-the-Lake breathes history, culture and elegance, At the
mouth of the Niagara River, the town is the birthplace of Upper Canada...a town
with one foot rooted in the past, and eyes firmly focused on the future.
The town was a major battlefield during the War of 1812 when Canada was
invaded by the United States. The town was shelled, attacked, captured,
occupied and later put to the torch by the American army as it retreated from a
combined British, Canadian and Native force. Rising from the ashes at the
end of the war, the town was rebuilt and has been preserved in its 19th century
splendour.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is now home to the outstanding Shaw Festival, with
culture and heritage at every step. The town, washed by the waters of the
Niagara River and Lake Ontario is defined by the fascinating historic sites,
unique shops, fine dining, restful natural settings, trails, incredible flower
gardens, all surrounded by lush orchards and vineyards which produce
award-winning wines. Niagara-on the-Lake is a paradise for residents and
visitors alike.
